VTEX vs Magento: Features, Cost and Migration (2026)
The core difference is who runs the platform. VTEX documents the core security infrastructure as its job and adjusts resources with traffic. With Magento you install and operate the software, or split duties with Adobe on cloud infrastructure. This page follows that split through languages, currency, tax and partners.
✦ FEATURES
Feature comparison.
| FEATURE | MAGENTO | VTEX |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the platform | Adobe's installation guide recommends Composer and says you need intermediate technical knowledge and server access. | VTEX IO docs say resources are dynamically adjusted based on traffic demands, maintaining uptime and performance even during peak usage. |
| Who maintains what | For Adobe Commerce on cloud infrastructure, Adobe is responsible for the environment and core code. The merchant secures custom code, integrations and extensions, and applies patches to them. | VTEX says it provides and maintains the core security infrastructure, while clients manage tokens and access at the account level. |
| Data protection scope | Adobe does not provide security support for deployments running unsupported dependency versions, so merchants keep services and extensions on supported versions. | VTEX's scope covers the platform infrastructure and its features. The merchant's scope covers the storefront, Admin settings, access credentials and local privacy regulations. |
| Certifications | Adobe lists PCI compliance of its infrastructure among its duties for Adobe Commerce on cloud infrastructure. | VTEX lists SOC 2 Type 2 reports and PCI-DSS validation of cardholder data controls, and says it logically segregates each account's data. |
| Pricing | The Adobe pages we reviewed list no Adobe Commerce price. | The VTEX pricing page lists no prices. Its contact form asks you to select an annual GMV range in USD. |
| Languages | Store views mainly change a store's page layout or language, and several stores under one website can share cart, user sessions and payment gateways. | One account can run stores under a path for each language, such as an English store and a Portuguese store. |
| Currency | You can manage different currencies per store view. | Currency code and locale are set per trade policy. Visitors outside the configured locale see prices with the ISO currency code, such as USD, and the setting applies only to the policy you saved it in. |
| Tax | Tax rules combine a product class, a customer class and a tax rate, and you create them in the Admin under Stores, Taxes, Tax Rules. | VTEX documents how to connect an external tax calculation provider to its APIs, and in its synchronous integration VTEX sends the provider a request whenever a shopper's cart changes. |
| Selling across borders | Adobe's multi-site overview covers websites, stores and store views, shared cart and sessions, and currencies per store view. | VTEX's cross-border guide asks you to pick target regions, payment currencies and site languages first. It advises choosing a partner for export taxes and fees if you fulfill from Brazil, and says to open a support ticket to set up a multistore environment. |
| Partners and support access | Partner accounts generally cannot submit merchant tickets. Only users with Shared Access from a merchant with support entitlements can. | VTEX runs a System Integrator program in which partners move up tiers based on certifications, won deals, stores under management, NPS and co-marketing activity. |
| Marketplaces | The Adobe pages we reviewed describe websites, stores and store views, not seller onboarding or commissions. | Any VTEX store can act as a seller in its own marketplace or in other marketplaces. Marketplaces can set seller commissions by category and onboard sellers through the Seller Portal. |
| Storefront and stack | Adobe's developer docs list Edge Delivery Services with Commerce dropins, PWA Studio and Page Builder CMS as storefront options. | VTEX IO lists TypeScript, React, GraphQL, .NET and Node as supported frameworks, and the Store Framework offers customizable React blocks. |
| B2B | Adobe's B2B docs list company accounts, shared catalogs, quick order, negotiable quotes and requisition lists. | The B2B Suite is a collection of VTEX IO apps with user groups, custom payment methods, purchase order numbers and order quotes. |
| SEO | Adobe's SEO overview covers robots.txt management without tying it to an edition. Metadata, site maps and URL rewrites carry a PaaS only badge. | VTEX generates canonical tags automatically for product, category, brand and custom pages, and its docs cover editing robots.txt. Meta tag control is documented for stores on the Legacy CMS Portal. |
✦ COST OF OWNERSHIP
Cost of ownership.
| COST ITEM | MAGENTO | VTEX |
|---|---|---|
| License | The Magento README names OSL 3.0 and says files may instead be licensed under the terms of an ordering document with Adobe (or Magento). The Adobe pages we reviewed list no Adobe Commerce price. | No price on the VTEX pricing page. The contact form asks for an annual GMV range. |
| Hosting | Not published on the Adobe pages we reviewed. | VTEX IO adjusts resources dynamically with traffic. No hosting price on the pages we reviewed. |
| Apps and extensions | No price on the Adobe pages we reviewed. | The B2B Suite is built from VTEX IO apps. No app price on the pages we reviewed. |
| Development | Orange Collar Media's own Magento support rates, not a market average: a 20-hour block for $3,800 ($190 an hour), or a 12-month contract at 20 hours a month and $160 an hour. | VTEX partner hourly rates are not published on the pages we reviewed. The program page lists partner tier fees only. |
✦ MIGRATION
Migration effort.
Moving from VTEX to Magento means mapping the catalog, customers and orders into Magento's data model. Storefronts built on the VTEX Store Framework use React blocks, so the front end is rebuilt as a Magento theme or a headless build. Rebuild the international setup as well: language paths and trade policies become websites, stores and store views, and the external tax provider needs a Magento equivalent or tax rules. VTEX IO apps, including B2B Suite organizations and quotes, need Magento equivalents or custom work. If you run marketplace sellers, decide how seller data and commissions are handled. Plan 301 redirects for every changed URL and re-test payment, tax and shipping before a date is set.
✦ CHOOSING
Which fits your store.
Choose Magento if
- You want to operate the software yourself, or split duties with Adobe under its shared responsibility model for cloud infrastructure.
- You want one installation with store views for languages and currencies set per store view.
- You want tax rules built from product class, customer class and tax rate in the Admin.
- You want a published release support date for planning, such as May 31, 2029 for Adobe Commerce version 2.4.9.
Choose VTEX if
- You want resources adjusted to traffic by the vendor rather than sized by your team.
- You want marketplaces with seller onboarding and commissions.
- You want to connect an external tax calculation provider through VTEX APIs.
- You want published SOC 2 Type 2 reports and PCI-DSS validation, with a System Integrator partner program behind implementations.
