Shopify Plus vs Shopify: When the Upgrade Pays

What Plus actually adds, when standard Shopify is enough, and the signals that say it's time.

Plus costs real money, so the question is simple: what do you get, and at what point does it pay for itself?

What Plus adds

  • Checkout extensibility - real customization of the checkout, which standard Shopify locks down.
  • Automation - Shopify Flow and Launchpad for the ops work your team does by hand.
  • Native B2B - company profiles, price lists, and wholesale without a bolted-on app.
  • Headroom - more staff accounts, API capacity, and expansion stores.

When standard Shopify is enough

If the locked checkout isn't blocking conversion work, your ops run fine without automation, and B2B isn't a channel, stay put. Most stores below serious volume are better served spending the difference on the storefront.

The signals it's time

Checkout conversion work you can't do because the checkout is locked. Manual order-ops that Flow would run. A wholesale channel held together with discount codes. Those are the three that actually justify it.

If you're weighing it, our Shopify Plus agency page covers what we build on Plus - and we'll tell you honestly if you don't need it yet.
