MAGENTO INTEGRATION

Magento Dynamics AX Integration: Connectors, Cost and Timeline

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 on October 13, 2021 and extended support on January 11, 2023. A Magento integration here means a choice: buy a vendor connector, build on AX's older SOAP services, or wait for the move to its successor.

WHAT SYNCS

What moves between Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and Magento.

DATADIRECTIONNOTES
OrdersOut of MagentoSales orders created through AX services, either document services or custom services.
InventoryInto MagentoOn-hand or available quantities by warehouse, polled from AX or pushed out of it.
Products and pricesInto MagentoReleased products and trade agreement prices. Scope depends on how far your AX has been customized.
CustomersBoth waysCustomer accounts and addresses. Store the AX customer account number on the Magento customer.
B2B accounts and price listsInto MagentoPrice groups and customer-specific pricing need an explicit mapping.
Invoices and paymentsInto MagentoPosted invoice and settlement status written back.
ShipmentsInto MagentoPacking slip posting and tracking written back.
Returns and cancellationsOut of MagentoCancelled and returned Magento orders have to reach AX so the sales order and stock stay correct. Folio3 lists returned-order and cancellation tracking in its connector.
Refunds (credit memos)Out of MagentoA Magento credit memo needs a matching credit or return posting in AX. Confirm whether partial refunds and restocking are covered before you pick a connector.
Multi-store routingOut of MagentoOrders from each Magento store view or website need to land on the right AX customer, legal entity or warehouse. Folio3 says its connector supports multiple Magento web stores against one AX.

THE API

The Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 API.

ASPECTDETAIL
API typeAX 2012 service endpoints: document services (AXDs), SOAP-based metadata and query services, an OData query service, and SOAP-based custom services.
AuthenticationNot verified in the sources we read for AX 2012. Current Finance and Operations uses OAuth 2.0 through Microsoft Entra ID; confirm what your AX estate uses with your AX partner.
Rate limitsNo published API rate limits found. Throughput depends on how your AOS is sized and customized.

Folio3 Dynamics AX and 365 connector for MagentoNativeVendor-built, prebuilt connector. Folio3 says it syncs new sales orders with customer and billing details, tracks returned orders and cancellations, supports refunds, updates inventory from AX to Magento and works across multiple Magento web stores. It describes a one-time installation fee plus an annual fee and shows no dollar amounts.Vendor page (opens in a new tab)
i95Dev AX ConnectNativeVendor-built, prebuilt connector. i95Dev's store page lists customers, products, inventory, sales orders, tier pricing, customer groups and credit limits. It does not list returns, credit memos, refunds or multi-store. The page shows $5,100.00 and a setup price of $9,995.00; confirm the billing term with i95Dev.Vendor page (opens in a new tab)

MuleSoft Adobe Commerce Connector (Mule 4)iPaaSThird-party connector for the Magento REST API, built by TA Digital and listed on MuleSoft Exchange, which says it requires an additional fee. Magento side only; the AX side is built as SOAP or service calls.Vendor page (opens in a new tab)

COST AND TIMELINE

Cost and timeline.

LEVELSCOPETYPICAL RANGETIMELINE
Level 1Connector set up and configured$3,000-8,0002-4 weeks
Level 2Custom API integration (orders, inventory, customers)$10,000-25,0004-8 weeks
Level 3 (this integration)Complex ERP sync (B2B pricing, multiple warehouses, middleware)$25,000-75,000+8-16 weeks

Typical range, quoted after a scoping call.

Prebuilt connectors exist from Folio3 and i95Dev, so this is not a from-scratch build by default. We still rate it level 3. AX 2012 estates are usually customized and often on-premises, the vendors' own pages do not cover every object (i95Dev lists no returns or refunds), and B2B pricing, warehouse mapping and a likely upgrade to Finance and Operations add scope. i95Dev's setup price alone is $9,995.00 on its store page. A stock, lightly customized AX with one store could scope closer to level 2.

WHERE THESE PROJECTS GO WRONG

Where these projects go wrong.

  • Support has ended. Microsoft lists mainstream support as ended October 13, 2021 and extended support as ended January 11, 2023.
  • The service layer changes on upgrade. AX 2012 document services and SOAP services give way to data entities and OData in Finance and Operations, so an AX integration may need rework when you migrate.
  • Customization drift. Customized tables, fields and workflows rarely match a clean Magento mapping.
  • Product dimensions. AX size, color and configuration dimensions must map to Magento configurable children.
  • Tax and totals. AX and Magento can disagree on rounding and tax groups when each recalculates an order.
  • Warehouses. Stock by site and warehouse has to map to Magento sources.
  • Network access. The integration host needs a route to the AOS, through a VPN or gateway.
  • Connector coverage gaps. Vendor pages list different objects, so check returns, credit memos and multi-store against your own order flow before you commit.

QUESTIONS MERCHANTS ASK

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 integration FAQ.

Is Dynamics AX 2012 still supported by Microsoft?+
No. Microsoft lists mainstream support for AX 2012 R3 as ending October 13, 2021 and extended support as ending January 11, 2023.
How does Magento connect to AX 2012?+
Through AX services (document services, SOAP custom services or the OData query service), either in a custom build or inside a vendor connector. Confirm the authentication your estate uses with your AX partner, because we could not verify it for AX 2012.
Should I integrate before or after moving to Dynamics 365?+
It depends on your timing. Microsoft supports upgrading AX 2012 R2 and R3 to Finance and Operations, and it calls the upgrade complex. If the move is already planned, building against the target system can save you from rewriting the integration later.
Are there ready-made connectors?+
Yes, from vendors. Folio3 sells a prebuilt Magento connector for Dynamics AX and Dynamics 365, and i95Dev sells AX Connect. Their pages list different objects, so compare them with your order flow. MuleSoft's Magento connector covers only the Magento side.
Prebuilt connector or custom build?+
A prebuilt connector fits when your AX is close to standard and your flows match the objects the vendor lists. Folio3 lists returns, cancellations, refunds and multi-store. i95Dev's page lists orders, inventory, customers, products and pricing. A custom build fits when you have custom AX tables, unusual returns or refund handling, or several stores routing to different entities. Either way, ask the vendor which AX 2012 release and Magento version they support.
What does an AX integration cost?+
The cost table above shows the typical ranges. Vendor connectors carry their own fees, such as i95Dev's setup price on its store page, and AX customization and on-premises work still add scope. The final number is quoted after a scoping call.
