The version your store runs decides one thing above all: whether Adobe still ships you security patches. Once a release line leaves support, every patch cycle is a list of vulnerabilities you're not receiving fixes for. Here's the current picture.

Current Magento 2.4.x support windows

2.4.9Released May 12, 2026 · supported to May 31, 2029 (current)
2.4.8Released April 8, 2025 · supported to May 31, 2028
2.4.7Released April 9, 2024 · supported to May 31, 2027
2.4.6Released March 14, 2023 · support ends August 11, 2026
2.4.5Standard support ended August 2025 · extended ends August 12, 2026
2.4.4 AND OLDEROut of support

Dates are from Adobe's software lifecycle policy, which is the source worth bookmarking - each 2.4.x line now gets roughly a three-year window from its release.

Which version should you be on?

2.4.8 is the safe current target; 2.4.9 if you're starting fresh or your extensions have caught up to it. The urgent case is 2.4.6: its support ends August 11, 2026, and stores on it should have an upgrade scheduled now, not on the roadmap. If you're on 2.4.5 or older, you're already living without patches.

The PHP clock runs alongside

Old Magento lines pin you to old PHP. PHP 8.1 left support at the end of 2025, and 8.2 follows at the end of 2026 - so an out-of-support Magento often means an out-of-support PHP underneath it too, which is two unpatched layers, not one. Upgrading the platform brings the PHP line with it.

Still on Magento 1?

Magento 1 support ended in June 2020. At this point the honest advice isn't an upgrade, it's a migration - and we'll tell you straight whether Magento 2 or another platform is the right destination.

FAQ

What is the latest Magento version?+
Magento 2.4.9 / Adobe Commerce 2.4.9, released May 12, 2026. 2.4.8 remains a fully supported target through May 2028.
How long is a Magento version supported?+
Roughly three years from release under Adobe's current lifecycle policy, with security patches only for supported lines.
Is Magento 1 still supported?+
No - support ended in June 2020. Every Magento 1 store has run unpatched since then, which is why we treat those as migrations, not upgrades.
Do I have to upgrade for every release?+
No, but you have to stay inside a supported window. Skipping a line is fine; running past your line's end-of-support date is not.
