One of the four extensions below is ours: we build and sell the OCM Labs Extra Fees module. Vendor writing a roundup, read accordingly.

The method, so you can check our work: every competitor claim in this post comes from that vendor's own product page, fetched in July 2026, with prices quoted as displayed then for the Magento Open Source tier. Where a page did not state something, we say "not stated" rather than filling the gap. The criteria come first, because for fee extensions the criteria are genuinely where buyers go wrong.

What actually separates Magento 2 extra fee extensions?

Not the checkout line. Any of these products can put "Handling fee $12.50" into a cart total; the differences show up three weeks later on invoices, credit memos, refunds, and tax reports. That is where we see stores get burned, and it is the part no demo screenshot shows. We wrote the mechanics up in detail in checkout fees through tax, invoices, and credit memos; the short checklist:

  • Invoice capture. When an order is partially invoiced, when does the fee get captured, and does it appear on the invoice document and PDF?
  • Refund behavior. Can the fee be refunded on a credit memo, can it be refunded partially, and is there anything preventing it from being refunded twice across two memos?
  • Tax. Can each fee carry its own tax class? Can amounts be entered tax-inclusive where your market expects it? Where does the fee's tax appear in totals?
  • Surfaces. Order emails, PDF invoices and credit memos, the customer account view, and admin order creation. A fee that exists at checkout and vanishes from the confirmation email generates support tickets.
  • Targeting. Product attributes, cart conditions, payment and shipping methods, customer groups, and how they combine.
  • Automatic versus shopper-selected. Rule-driven charges that just apply, or optional services the shopper picks via checkbox, radio, or dropdown. Most vendors lean one way; know which one you need.
  • Plumbing. REST and GraphQL if anything headless touches your checkout, and Hyva support stated for both the theme and Hyva Checkout.

The comparison table

Prices are each vendor's Magento Open Source tier as displayed on their own product page in July 2026. Enterprise tiers cost more everywhere.

OCM Labs Extra Fees, $250

Ours, with the disclosure repeated. It is built around rule-driven charges that apply themselves and then survive the accounting.

Each fee is a named rule with conditions built from product attributes and SKU plus eight cart-level conditions (subtotal, quantity, shipping country, region and postcode, customer group, shipping and payment method), combined with AND or OR. Fees are fixed or percentage, with optional min and max caps on percentages, and each renders as its own labeled line in totals so shoppers see what they are paying for. Fees can be scoped per store view with label overrides, scheduled with active windows, and taxed through Magento's tax engine with a per-fee tax class (tax and currency details).

The lifecycle is the part we would put against anyone: fees persist to the order and render across cart, checkout, emails, invoices, credit memos, PDFs, customer account and guest views, and admin order creation. The full fee is captured on the first invoice and refunded on the first credit memo after it, and the module never refunds more than was invoiced. Admins get a fee revenue report, a change log of who edited what, and a view-only ACL role for finance. Optional fees exist as checkout checkboxes, exposed over REST and GraphQL.

Honest limits: optional fees are checkboxes in the checkout summary, not product page option blocks with radios and dropdowns. If your model is shopper-picked service add-ons starting on the PDP, Amasty and MageWorx aim more squarely at that. $250 Open Source, $500 for the Adobe Commerce variant, Magento 2.4.7 to 2.4.8, PHP 8.3+, part of our extension line.

Amasty Extra Fee, $219

Per Amasty's product page in July 2026: unlimited fees driven by conditions on payment and shipping methods and on products by SKU, name, or any attribute, with percent or fixed amounts. The frontend model is fee blocks on cart, checkout, and success pages where shoppers pick options through dropdown, radio, or checkbox inputs. Tax handling includes assigning a preferred tax class per fee and controlling tax display. On refunds, the page describes choosing which fees to refund and in what amounts when creating a credit memo, which is a real answer to the partial refund question. GraphQL read and write support is listed, along with Hyva and Hyva Checkout readiness, WCAG compliance for Luma and Hyva, and compatibility from 2.4.5 through 2.4.9 patch releases. $219 for Community includes twelve months of updates and support; prolongation is $135.

The fit: stores selling optional services at checkout who also want conditional surcharges, on the widest stated version range of the four.

Mageplaza Extra Fee, $199 first year

Per Mageplaza's product page in July 2026: unlimited fees as fixed amounts per product or per order, or percentage of cart total, applied manually by shopper selection (radio, checkbox, dropdown) or automatically by rules on product attributes, cart attributes like subtotal, quantity, and weight, customer attributes, payment methods, or shipping methods. Fees can display in the order summary, payment and shipping sections, and on product pages. The page lists refund handling for credit memos, priority levels, active duration windows, store view and customer group visibility, Hyva and Hyva Checkout support, One Step Checkout compatibility, and API and GraphQL. Compatibility is stated as 2.4.4 through 2.4.9. $199 first year for Community; $399 for Enterprise.

The fit: the most placement flexibility per dollar of entry price, with first-year licensing to factor into three-year cost.

MageWorx Multi Fees, $199

Per MageWorx's product page in July 2026: fees at four attachment points (product, cart, payment, shipping and handling), fixed or percentage, with conditions on product attributes, cart contents, weight, spend, quantity, and customer location. Shoppers select fees through dropdown, radio, or checkbox inputs, optionally with a comment box and date picker, which suits service add-ons like assembly appointments. Fees display through product pages, cart, checkout, customer accounts, confirmation emails, invoices, and credit memos. Tax controls include per-fee tax class and include or exclude entry. GraphQL comes via a free add-on, REST is supported, and the page carries Hyva-ready and Hyva Checkout badges. $199 for Open Source with a year of updates and support; the page states lifetime access to the source code. Compatibility is stated as CE and EE 2.4.x.

One gap worth testing: the page shows fees on invoice and credit memo documents but does not describe partial refund behavior or double-refund guards. Run the refund drill below before going live. The fit: stores monetizing optional services across the whole funnel, starting on the product page.

The refund drill: test any of these before launch

Whichever product you buy, including ours, run one sandbox order end to end: fee applied, partial invoice, then a partial credit memo, then attempt a second memo touching the same fee. Check the fee and its tax on both PDFs, both emails, and the totals of every document. Twenty minutes, and it surfaces every lifecycle gap we have ever been called in to fix. If you would rather see the mechanics first, they are in our lifecycle walkthrough, and if you are weighing writing a collector yourself instead, start with custom code vs extension.

Which one should you pick?

  • Rule-driven automatic surcharges with audited invoice and refund math: ours, $250.
  • Optional checkout services plus conditional fees, widest version range: Amasty, $219.
  • Most display placements at the lowest entry price: Mageplaza, $199 first year.
  • Product page service add-ons with comments and date pickers: MageWorx, $199.

FAQ

What is the best extra fee extension for Magento 2?+
Depends on whether your fees are automatic or shopper-selected. For rule-driven surcharges with strict invoice and refund behavior, ours (OCM Labs Extra Fees, $250, disclosed vendor). For shopper-picked service fees, Amasty ($219), Mageplaza ($199 first year), and MageWorx ($199) all center that model. Prices from vendor pages, July 2026.
Can Magento 2 add an extra fee without an extension?+
Not from the admin; there is no core feature. A developer can register a custom totals collector, which handles checkout but not invoices, credit memos, taxes, or refunds without a lot more work. We published the working collector code and its limits in our custom code vs extension post.
How should an extra fee behave on a credit memo?+
It should be refundable at most once in total, never for more than was invoiced, with its tax adjusted alongside. Vendor pages rarely state this precisely (Amasty describes per-memo fee refund amounts; ours captures on first invoice and blocks over-refunding), so test the refund drill in a sandbox regardless of vendor.
Do extra fee extensions calculate tax correctly?+
The four here all state tax controls: per-fee tax classes on ours, Amasty, and MageWorx, and tax display options on Mageplaza. What to verify for your store is tax-inclusive entry if you price gross, and where the fee's tax lands in order totals and reports.
Do these fee extensions work with Hyva?+
All four state Hyva support as of July 2026, and Amasty, Mageplaza, and MageWorx also state Hyva Checkout support. If you run Hyva Checkout specifically, confirm the checkout piece in the vendor demo, not just the theme badge.
