X.commerce Innovate Conference: Day 1

Yesterday, the brains behind Orange Collar Media, Shane and Robyn, made the journey west for the first ever X.commerce Innovate Developer Conference.  We are very lucky to have two people who are so excited about the future of X.commerce (read: Magento) that they were willing to take time out of the busy first day of the conference to send us pictures and updates.  Here’s a brief highlight of what happened today (we will discuss all of these topics individually in great detail starting next week.

X.commerce

The X.commerce platform was officially announced this morning in San Francisco.  This new technology will allow developers to build new commerce tools and services for merchants, as well as provide a marketplace for merchants and developers to buy and sell those tools and services.  X.commerce is an open platform that is designed specifically with developers in mind because it enables them to quickly build applications that connect to a large number of commerce services, both online and offline.  The eBay owned commerce services, like PayPal, Magento, GSI Commerce, and Milo, are expected to be the largest recipients of new applications.  X.commerce is a little bit different than one would expect because it is not designed specifically for those eBay affiliates, but instead is open for any developers on any platform.

Magento 2

This afternoon, Magento’s Yoav Kutner took the stage to announce the release of Magento 2.  There are not many official details out about Magento 2 yet, but here’s the information we got from today:

Magento 2: Taking Everything to the Next Realm
- Refactor rather than rewrite
- Clear Process and Transparency
- Improved product quality (Unit, Integration, Functional, Performance, etc.)
- Improved product performance and scalability
- Improved WEB API coverage
- Support of multiple RDBMS’s
- Improve Modularity (Component vs. Module)
- Simplified Customization Process
- Improved Multiple Languages support

Extras

Here are some notes Robyn shared with me:
- X.commerce is available to download today.
- Orange Collar Media developers will be X.commerce-Magento certified.
- X.commerce will allow Magento to be more flexible and more social.
- X.commerce slogan: Our platform.  Your imagination.
- X.commerce allows so many avenues of commerce that it will no longer just be eCommerce.
- SoLoMo = social local mobile shopping (something X.commerce will enable).

AND, here is the email that was sent to the X.commerce Innovate Developer Conference attendees this evening:

Innovate Attendees:

Today, we got to hear from John Donahoe from eBay, Blake Mycoskie from TOMS Shoes, Bill Ingram from Adobe, and Katie Mitic from Facebook. We debuted X.commerce, eBay’s new open commerce platform. And started to demonstrate how this already-thriving ecosystem is transforming the future of commerce.

Tonight, after you enjoy the Partner Pavilion Reception to meet the sponsors, make your way over to the party at Moscone North (Hall D) for drinks, entertainment, and a killer performance by The Shins! It’s one party you don’t want to miss!

And there is more tomorrow:
- We’ll hear from Chris Bangle, one of the most dynamic speakers on the subject of design and innovation and the former Chief of Design at BMW (Just named #4 of the Top 50 Most Influential Designers in America by Fast Company)
- Marshal Cohen, one of the world’s pre-eminent consumer analysts, will help us understand the key trends and behaviors that will shape commerce – and all of our work – in the future
- We’re recognizing innovation that’s happening real-time with Community Awards and winners of the VC Bait sessions

There is a lot going on and a lot to see, do, learn about and talk about at Innovate. So, if you missed these sessions Day 1, you can catch up on Day 2.

We will provide information about tomorrow’s day of exciting events as it becomes available.  Please make sure to check out the Orange Collar Media Facebook page for pictures from today, and Twitter (@orangecollar) for the most recent updates about the conference.
