Today, we continue our “Magento vs. The Rest” series with Magento vs. ASP.NET. Over the last two months, we have been writing about the wide variety of eCommerce platforms currently available to business owners. In a post called, “Choosing the Right eCommerce Platform: Magento vs. the Rest,” we went over the major differences between Magento and 3DCart, osCommerce, Volusion, ChannelAdvisor, and Infopia. Over the past few weeks, we have covered Magento vs. X-Cart, Magento vs. WordPress e-Commerce Plugin, Magento vs. VirtueMart, Magento vs. BigCommerce, and Magento vs. Zen Cart. Today is dedicated to Microsoft ASP.NET.
Magento
Magento is a feature-rich, professional open-source eCommerce solution that offers merchants complete flexibility and control over the look, content, and functionality of their online store. Magento’s powerful marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), and catalog-management tools give merchants the power to create eCommerce sites that are tailored to their unique business needs. Magento was founded in 2001 and has made a recent partnership with eBay that has enhanced its growing community of developers who are constantly improving and creating new features, extensions, and modules. Magento has been praised for having the best technical support teams of any eCommerce platform. Magento is ideally suited for companies that need a professional online store presence.
Sidenote: x.commerce is the combination of eBay, PayPal, and Magento and the first ever Innovate Developer Conference for x.commerce is coming up on October 12th and 13th.
Microsoft ASP.NET
ASP.NET is a web application framework from Microsoft that was developed in order to allow programmers to build web sites, web applications, and web services. ASP.NET was first released in 2002 and is the successor to Microsoft’s Active Server Pages (ASP) technology. ASP allows developers to combine HTML pages, script commands, and COM components to create interactive web pages and web-based applications that are easy to create and modify. APS.NET is built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR) environment, which allows programmers to write code for ASP.NET in any supported .NET language. There are a number of eCommerce platforms built on the ASP.NET framework, such as Znode, AspDotNetStorefront, AdVantShop, and nopCommerce. For now, we will keep our comparison simple and limit it to ASP.NET in general.
ASP.NET (vs. Magento)
- Magento is PHP-based eCommerce platform, providing features and flexibility.
- Magento is open source, while ASP.NET platforms can be open source or full source.
- Magento has a very large community following through Varien because it is open source. Full source platforms tend to have a less active community.
- Magento offers extensive features “out of the box.”
- Magento has the best integrated SEO capabilities of any eCommerce platform available.
Given the inherent difficulty in comparing Magento to an application framework as opposed to a specific eCommerce platform, we will compare Magento to some ASP.Net-based platforms in the future. Keep an eye out for future posts in the “Magento vs. The Rest” series.
