Today, we continue our “Magento vs. The Rest” series with Magento vs. AgoraCart. Over the last few months, we have been writing about the wide variety of eCommerce platforms currently available to business owners. In a post called, “Choosing the Right eCommerce Platform: Magento vs. the Rest,” we went over the major differences between Magento and 3DCart, osCommerce, Volusion, ChannelAdvisor, and Infopia. Over the past few weeks, we have compared Magento to a number of other eCommerce platforms, including:
Magento vs. X-Cart
Magento vs. WordPress e-Commerce Plugin
Magento vs. VirtueMart
Magento vs. BigCommerce
Magento vs. Zen Cart
Magento vs. Microsoft ASP.NET
Magento vs. PrestaShop
Magento vs. Avactis
Magento vs. Spree
And now, we are happy to present: Magento vs. AgoraCart.
Magento
Magento is a feature-rich, professional open-source eCommerce solution that offers merchants complete flexibility and control over the look, content, and functionality of their online store. Magento’s powerful marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), and catalog-management tools give merchants the power to create eCommerce sites that are tailored to their unique business needs. Magento was founded in 2001 and has made a recent partnership with eBay that has enhanced its growing community of developers who are constantly improving and creating new features, extensions, and modules. Magento has been praised for having the best technical support teams of any eCommerce platform. Magento is ideally suited for companies that need a professional online store presence. Magento supports the Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems.
Magento is now a part of the X.commerce integrated eCommerce platform that combines eBay, PayPal, Magento, Milo, Where, RedLaser, and GSI Commerce. X.commerce was announced earlier this month in San Francisco at the X.commerce Innovate Developer Conference.
AgoraCart
AgoraCart is a flexible and secure open source eCommerce shopping cart software. According to the website, AgoraCart is the “eCommerce shopping cart solution for merchants” because it is “designed to be flexible, powerful, and secure.” AgoraCart offers unlimited categories and products, as well as account-free checkout and a number of shipping options and payment gateways. AgoraCart is a free software created by K-Factor Technologies using the Perl language and a custom database. There is not much information about the history of AgoraCart, but they are currently updating for version 6.0.0, which is coming soon according to the website.
AgoraCart (vs. Magento)
- Both AgoraCart and Magento offer unlimited products and categories.
- AgoraCart is only available in English, while Magento supports multiple languages.
- Both softwares have gift certificate functionality.
- Magento has top of the line built-in SEO (search engine optimization) features, but AgoraCart does not.
- Discount coupons are offered from AgoraCart, but only through a third-party extension (it is a standard feature of Magento).
- Magento has wish list capability, whereas AgoraCart does not.
- AgoraCart offers secure trading and non-credit card options, but Magento does not provide these features.
- Magento offers a wide range of reporting options, including sales, search, low stock, and inventory reports. Only sales and search reports are available with AgoraCart.
Magento has a significantly larger number of reviews available as compared to AgoraCart. Based on the reviews of AgoraCart, it seems that it is an eCommerce platform aimed towards beginners. Users with little HTML knowledge can have a functional store in a couple weeks, while advanced HTML and CSS experience can create a highly complex store without a great deal of effort. AgoraCart boasts a well-sized community and a good support forum.
As we have seen many times before, Magento offers a much more comprehensive eCommerce platform straight out of the box. Adding custom functionality to Magento is easier (doesn’t require third-party extensions), but typically will require more technical knowledge. AgoraCart offers a more simple base eCommerce store that can get beginners started quickly.
